Diablo IV, the highly anticipated entry in the beloved Diablo series, is set to launch on June 6, 2023. In the meantime, two beta periods have been held in order to test the servers and provide players with a sneak peek of the new game. With new stats and skills, there are plenty of exciting features to explore. One such stat is Overpower, which can be a little confusing, but fear not, as this guide will explain it all.
According to the in-game tooltip, Overpower is a stat that adds extra damage equal to the sum of the player’s current Life and their Fortified Life. The chance for this to occur is 3%, and this number cannot be increased through stats. However, certain skills, such as the Barbarian’s Combat Bash, can guarantee an Overpowered attack.
The damage bonus of Overpowered attacks can be improved by increasing Willpower. Many pieces of gear offer increases too, as do certain Aspects. When a character’s attack Overpowers, the damage text appears in blue. If the attack Crits, it appears in yellow. If an attack both Overpowers and Crits, the text appears in orange.
In order to maximize the damage dealt by an Overpowered attack, it is best to stay at full health, build up Fortified Life, trigger a guaranteed Overpowered attack, and then use a skill that deals immense damage. Overpowered damage scales with stat bonuses and stacks with Critical Attack bonuses. This means that Overpowered attacks can deal over four times the damage of a regular attack when done correctly.
For example, let’s assume a player has 50 Life, 25 Fortified Life, +25% Physical Damage, and +100% Overpower Damage. They hit a creature for 100 Physical damage. If that attack Overpowers, it would break down as follows: 100*1.25 + (50+25)*1.25)*2=437.5. If that attack also Crits, it will rise by at least another 50%, increasing the total to 656. Therefore, triggering Overpowered attacks requires a lot of work, but it can be done.
In addition to Barbarian’s Combat Bash, other skills that can guarantee Overpowered attacks include Sorcerer’s Arcane Blast, Rogue’s Serrated Arrow, and Necromancer’s Bone Spear. As the game is still in beta, future updates may bring more skills capable of guaranteeing Overpowered attacks.
Diablo IV launches on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5. Fans of the Diablo series will be excited to explore this new addition, with its new stats and skills providing even more depth and complexity than before.
