Circana, formerly known as NPD, has revealed its monthly report for April 2023 in the US. According to the report, total spending on games has dropped, but hardware sales boomed. The best-selling game of the month was Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, rising to the fourth spot in the year-to-date charts after only two days of release. The second best-selling game in April was Dead Island 2, with MLB The Show 23, Resident Evil 4, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare II rounding out the top five spots.
On the mobile side, Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, and Royal Match topped the revenue charts for the month. Interestingly, Pokemon Go dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since April 2022, which may have been influenced due to the price hike of certain in-game purchases.
In terms of hardware sales, total spending jumped up by 7% to $367 million, marking the best hardware revenue spending since April 2020. While the PS5 topped the monthly sales chart for dollar sales, the Nintendo Switch was the top-performing console in terms of sales units. The Xbox saw a decline in sales, with both the PS5 and Switch seeing double-digit percentage growth in dollar sale figures. Year-to-date spending on hardware in the US has increased 18% to $1.8 billion compared to the figures from the previous year.
As for accessories, they generated the same amount of revenue as the previous month at $158 million. The PS5 DualSense Edge controller was the top-seller both in April 2023 and the year-to-date for dollar sales.
