According to recent reports, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has disclosed that June 2019 was the hottest June on record around the globe. The results of NOAA’s research, which was conducted over three decades, demonstrate the scale of global warming and the extent of the crisis we’re facing.

One of the most alarming aspects of the NOAA’s findings is that the record-setting temperatures occurred without the presence of a strong El Niño event to boost them. Historically, El Niño has caused rises in global temperatures, but this latest heat wave was distinct. Furthermore, the results coincide with May 2019’s high temperatures, which ranked as the second-highest on record. These worrying figures paint a grim picture for the future if significant measures aren’t taken to address global warming.

According to research, the average temperature for June was 0.95°C (1.71°F) above the 20th-century average of 15.5°C (59.9°F). Even more concerning is that the primary cause of global warming, the ever-increasing concentration of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, shows no signs of decreasing. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has also released a statement warning that this trend is unlikely to change. According to WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas, the earth is currently around 1.1°Celsius warmer than it was before the industrial era. If this trend continues, we are looking towards a temperature increase of 3-5°C, which would cause catastrophic changes and displace millions of people.

In recent years, there have been several breakthroughs in renewable energy and energy efficiency. However, these developments have been overshadowed by the continued use of fossil fuels and lack of political will. Additionally, the agreements established at the Paris Climate Summit in 2015 are yet to be implemented fully and with urgency. If nations fail to act and contribute towards a solution, then the negative effects of global warming- including rising sea levels, food crises, and extreme weather events- will become irresolvable.

The NOAA’s report is a severe wakeup call for governments worldwide. With the continued hotter-than-average temperatures, there is an urgent need to address manmade climate change. We can no longer continue business as usual. The future of our planet depends on immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable practices.
