PlayStation Showcase Biggest Winners and Losers
The long-awaited PlayStation Showcase is over and enthusiasts are divided in their opinions on the event. To categorize the showcase, we picked out winners and losers. In an event that lasted for over an hour, it is unfair to lump everything together. Hence, here are the PlayStation Showcase winners and losers:
Winner: Metal Gear Solid
The first winner on this list is Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. The game is real and it’s a full remake for the current-gen. The first three games of the franchise will be bundled together in a PS5 collection that will launch later this year, much to the joy of its die-hard fans.
Loser: Fairgame$
The PlayStation Showcase opened with the reveal of the game developer Haven Studios’ competitive multiplayer heist game called Fairgame$ with an emphasis on attitude. While the live-service title is yet to be released, the name and uninspired CG trailer has already set the tone for disappointment and lowered the expectations of fans, which is not a good sign.
Winner: Capcom Capgod
Capcom has yet again won the hearts of gamers with its impressive output. The new trailer for Street Fighter 6, the announcement of the Resident Evil 4 launch and the reveal of Dragon’s Dogma 2 has left fans impressed with an expectation of more such great output from the powerhouse.
Loser: PlayStation Studios
We are still in the dark when it comes to Sony’s first-party projects post Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Fans expected the PlayStation Showcase to give a roadmap for the future of PS5, but were instead greeted with shrug-inducing CG trailers and no update on projects from Sucker Punch, Sony Bend, Bluepoint, and many more. Sony has not been this secretive since the PS4 era, which means fans were left disappointed.
Winner: Alan Wake II
The showcased horror-driven adventure game Alan Wake II will reportedly release this year on October 17, making it one of the best trailers at the PlayStation Showcase and a much-awaited sequel since its release date was confirmed.
Loser: Phantom Blade Zero’s English Voice Acting
The reveal trailer for the Phantom Blade Zero’s action RPG game was impressive but ruined by the cringe-worthy voice acting that received negative online comments. It was an unexpected and disappointing feature for fans.
Winner: Helldivers II
The game franchise Helldivers has returned with an evolved concept. The trailer for it conveyed probable chaos and the evolution from a top-down blast’em-up to an over-the-shoulder bullet-sprayer is great news for fans and gamers.
Loser: PSVR2
The PlayStation Showcase failed to convey why early adopters should be excited about the platform’s future. With only Resident Evil 4’s VR adaptation being the big PSVR2 title on the horizon, there was a lack of announcement regarding the future of PlayStation Studios.
Winner: Sword of the Sea
The trailer for Sword of the Sea gave fans good vibes and will remind players of “Journey,” the Push Square rated 10/10 game. The trailer for Giant Squid project suggests that this game will be the spiritual successor, and it looks like an interesting game as you can use a sword as a surfboard, adding an exciting feature for gameplay.
Loser: Granblue Fantasy: Relink
Granblue Fantasy: Relink was first announced in 2016 and was expected to release this year. Unfortunately, when it was revealed at the PlayStation Showcase, Cygames just updated the game’s release window to “Winter 2023,” disappointing fans.
Winner: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
The gameplay reveal for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was impressive and would have had a better reception had it come after a list of impressive releases at the PlayStation Showcase event. The game takes full advantage of the current-gen hardware, providing a combination of exciting setpieces for players to experience.
Loser: Foamstars
The game is yet to be tried, but it is another disappointing character design similar to Splatoon. Fans have called it out for being a live-service game, which has been seen before and there is little excitement for such games anymore.
Winner: Queen
Beat Saber DLC has been announced with Queen, which is great news for fans of the game and will surely receive a warm response.
So, these were the winners and losers of the PlayStation Showcase for 2021. What are your thoughts on the winners and losers? Share your views in the comments.
