Sony PS5 sales have outpaced the combined sales of the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X consoles in the first four months of 2023, according to recent sales data from VGChartz. Between January and April, the PS5 saw global sales of 6.92 million units, up 178.1% year on year and accounting for 50% of the console market. This compares with 4.35 million units sold by the Nintendo Switch and 1.89 million Xbox Series X consoles – down 19.8% and 25.4% year on year, respectively. In addition, the console’s year-to-date sales through 5 November 2022 were 6.72 million units.
The sales momentum is being driven by the PS5’s strong lineup of exclusive games, such as “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” and “Demon’s Souls,” and its powerful processor and graphics card. However, the console is also the most expensive on the market, and supply chain issues remain a challenge for some purchasers. In addition, the Nintendo Switch has a larger market share than Sony, meaning there is still work to do to catch up with it.
The success of the PS5 offers a significant achievement for Sony and is a testament to the innovation and market appeal of its products. However, it remians to be seen how if Sony can maintain its momentum moving forward given its competitors in the market.
