Supermassive Games, the developers behind acclaimed cinematic horror games such as Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry, have been signed up to adapt the popular asymmetrical multiplayer game Dead by Daylight into a single player story-driven game for the PS5 and PS4 consoles. The spin-off project was announced by developer Behaviour as part of an anniversary livestream, with more information set to be revealed in the coming months.
Though the project is still in the early stages of development, it is expected to expand on Supermassive Games’ previous work and incorporate some of the original characters from Dead by Daylight’s lore. During a top secret presentation, representatives from Behaviour wouldn’t confirm nor deny this, but simply promised that more details would come.
This move is part of a broader plan to expand the Dead by Daylight brand beyond the core game. A movie based on the franchise is currently in the works, with Atomic Monster and Blumhouse announced as partners. The studio is actively recruiting a director and screenwriter to bring its vision to the big screen.
Meanwhile, a third player versus environment (PvE) game is also in development by subsidiary Midwinter Entertainment. The game will tackle themes of “greed and lust” and will be a four-player co-op experience set in a new corner of the Entity’s Realm.
Supermassive Games certainly has a lot on its plate, but CEO and Executive Producer Pete Samuels expresses excitement about the potential of the new single player adaptation of Dead by Daylight: “We are thrilled to be working with Behaviour Interactive on this exciting new opportunity for fans of Dead by Daylight. It’s a great testament to the success of the franchise and the passion of our team to see it branch out into other forms of media.”
Fans of the game will certainly have a lot to look forward to, with its expansion into a single player game, movie and third PvE game. For now, they can speculate on what this expansion could bring, and await more details in the upcoming months.
