Mini Review: Zool Redimensioned (PS4) – Blast from the Past Packs Neat Modern Features

Gremlin Interactive, an iconic developer from the early days of console gaming, has returned with a modern take on the 1992 platformer, Zool.

Zool Redimensioned, produced by Sumo Digital’s Academy initiative, levels up the original game with new modes and features on the PlayStation 4. Built from the SEGA Mega Drive code, the game has been updated with modern elements while keeping the charm of the original game.

The game follows the titular ninja, Zool, as he navigates abstract worlds made up of themes like music and vegetables. The gameplay is a mix of Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man, with fast-paced levels where Zool can jump, shoot, climb and slide. The game’s design encourages players to collect points and run at speed through the levels.

One of the most impressive features of this remaster is the variety of modes and quality of life additions. Players can choose from two versions of the main game, one with a more modern aspect ratio and a double jump, the other closer to Gremlin’s original. For those players that just want to breeze through, assists are available, including infinite lives and turbo fire. Furthermore, there are party modes available for local multiplayer.

The game’s audio has been updated to crisp quality, but some players may find the jarring music doesn’t stand the test of time. This minor gripe doesn’t detract from the overall gameplay experience, which remains as charming as it was in 1992.

In summary, Zool Redimensioned improves upon the original game while adding modern elements that further sweeten the deal. If you’re a fan of the genre and enjoy classic platformers, Zool Redimensioned is well worth your investment.

The Good

  • Return of a genre great
  • Quality of life additions are appreciated
  • Surprising variety of modes

The Bad

  • The music is an acquired taste nowadays
  • Not enough content for real longevity

Score: 7/10
