Dead Island 2 Steam Deck Performance Review

Dead Island 2, the popular zombie slaying game, finally has a release date of February 21, 2023. The game will be exclusively released on Epic Games and not on Steam. However, the game can still be played on the Steam Deck by either installing Heroic Launcher or the Epic Games launcher. The latter option requires minor adjustments to allow the game to work smoothly on the Steam Deck.

Even though the game does not have a Steam version, Dead Island 2 works perfectly on Steam Deck with minor hardware limitations. Dead Island 2 has some peculiarities that occur on the Steam deck such as shader pre-caching every time a game starts, which only takes about five seconds. Another peculiarity is when the cutscene starts, there would be a freeze frame that flashes on the screen from a previous cutscene. These issues do not spoil the fun and are not apparent while playing the game on a desktop.

The Steam Deck controls are a good fit for the Dead Island 2 game. The right trackpad can be used for aiming, while the left trackpad can be used as an alternative D-Pad. The display resolution on the Steam Deck is automatically set at the native 1280×800 resolution without any letterboxing.

Dead Island 2 has a few graphics settings that do not run well with the Steam Deck. However, the game runs tidily on Low, Medium, and High settings with AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 on Quality setting. The Low settings reach up to 60fps on occasion, mainly inside LA’s many mansion interiors. Still, it is also prone to dropping below 30fps when whacking the zombies. The Medium preset setting is also playable, but it crashes occasionally. Therefore, the best balance is to identify the most FPS-hungry of the individual options and bust them down to Low.

Here are some recommended Steam Deck settings for Dead Island 2:
* Motion Blur: 0
* Anti-Aliasing: Temporal AA High
* View Distance: High
* Post Processing: High
* Shadows: Low
* Textures: Medium
* Effects: Low
* Foliage Detail: High
* SSAO: Low
* Indirect Shadows: High
* Depth of Field: Low
* Screen Space Reflections: Medium
* Material Quality: High
* Shading Quality: Low
* AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2: Quality
* AMD FidelityFX Variable Shading: On

In conclusion, Dead Island 2 runs well on the Steam Deck, and with the right settings, the game can be played comfortably. Despite the game’s peculiarities on the Steam Deck, it is still a fun and exciting game that is worth playing. Be sure to check it out.
