A new study shows that regular exercise may reduce the risk of developing depression, even in individuals genetically predisposed to the condition.
The study, published in Journal of the American Medical Association Psychiatry, analyzed data from over 8,000 participants who were part of the Partners Biobank, a research program that collects biological samples and medical information from patients to better understand the link between genes and diseases. The participants were asked to report their exercise activity levels and were also analyzed for genetic risk factors for depression.
The researchers found that individuals who were genetically predisposed to depression but engaged in regular physical activity had a 17% lower risk of developing depression compared to those who did little or no exercise. Even more significantly, individuals with the highest genetic risk for depression who exercised regularly had a 35% lower risk of developing the condition.
“These findings suggest that exercise can be a powerful tool for preventing depression, even in people who are at a higher genetic risk.”
Co-author of the study, Dr. Karmel Choi, also notes that the study provides important insight for healthcare providers. “The results suggest that it is important for healthcare providers to consider patients’ activity levels and physical health when assessing their risk for depression,” says Dr. Choi.
Prior studies have already shown a link between exercise and mental health benefits, but this new study adds to the growing body of research that suggests exercise can help in both the prevention and treatment of depression.
