The highly acclaimed game, Shantae, will be available for download on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 from June 2nd, 2023 for $9.99. With the release of the original Shantae, the entire series will be available on PlayStation platforms for the first time.
Developed by WayForward, the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 versions of Shantae are powered by Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine while retaining the graphics, sound and gameplay of the game’s initial release. However, the developer added features such as control options, save states and visual filters to enhance the overall gameplay experience.
Shantae was originally released in 2002 on Game Boy Color as a nonlinear action-adventure platformer game. It introduced the world to the eponymous half-genie heroine who had the ability to shape-shift, hip-shake and hair-whip. The game challenged players with the task of helping Shantae find four elemental stones across Sequin Land in order to stop the nefarious Lady pirate, Risky Boots.
In addition to battling fiendish enemies, exploring treacherous labyrinths and encountering allies such as Rottytops, Sky and Bolo, players had to conquer mini-games while gaining amazing new abilities.
The PlayStation version includes a bonus Game Boy Advance functionality of the vintage cartridge, which adds an extra transformation and an alternative color palette. Alongside the standard GBC mode, players can choose between standard Game Boy Color mode or Game Boy Advance-enhanced mode.
With the release of the original Shantae, the entire Shantae series, which includes Shantae, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Ultimate Edition, and Shantae and the Seven Sirens, will be available on PlayStation systems for the very first time. Each game in the series will be sold separately.
The environments in the game change from day to night, and players can discover secret passages, hidden Warp Squids, and fireflies while buying a variety of items and upgrades to gain new abilities. The game also includes updated features such as save states, multiple display options, control improvements, and a mini art gallery.
The game is also currently available digitally on Switch. The original Shantae’s release on PlayStation is set to make the full series playable on PlayStation.
