Star Wars: Jedi Survivor helmer Stig Asmussen has expressed his ambition to create a trilogy of games based on the story of Cal Kestis, potentially suggesting that Respawn Entertainment is hard at work on a third and final installment of the series.
Speaking on IGN Unfiltered, Asmusssen intimated that a potential third Star Wars: Jedi game may come to fruition if the imminent Jedi: Survivor garners enough success.
Speculation had been mounting even before the launch of Jedi: Fallen Order in 2019, with discussions of a potential sequel already underway.
“We were already discussing the next installment,” Asmussen stated, his eyes widening. “To be honest, we were even pondering further ahead. It was a dialogue between us and Lucasfilm to establish what the future of this game holds.”
“I dreamed of a grandiose three-part saga that could push Cal and the crew to unexplored depths,” he remarked. “How far could we go? Where could we take them that they had never been before?”
“We had a clear vision of when Survivor should unfold, the stakes at hand, the atmosphere of the game, what Cal would have to face, and how the crew would play into it all. Of course, there were other plans for what could come next, too.”
“I dare say it’s an expectation,” Asmussen proclaimed, “that any potential third installment in this series would be built with Unreal Engine 5, leaving Unreal Engine 4 in its wake.”
“It’s not gonna be a walk in the park, I’m tellin’ ya. We’ve got some serious custom stuff that we’ve built our engine around to do what it does for us now, and we’d have to essentially re-do it all to get it to run on any other engine.”
Jedi: Survivor is set to blast off on April 28, giving eager fans their first opportunity to experience the long-awaited sequel. With a slew of improvements over its predecessor, Respawn has equipped the game with a host of features, among them the highly sought-after fast-travel capability.
In our review of the game, IGN proclaimed: “Jedi: Survivor radiates grandeur without ever allowing the expanse to impede the journey of exploration and revelation that serves as its core.”
